History of the temple

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Sri Vaithiyalinga Swami Annai Yogambigai temple is in Aladipatti. It is nearly 500 years old temple.

Initially the temple deity was found in Kallal also known as Koolaiyan Koondu near Kurumbur. This temple did not have any proper buildings. Poojas for the deity was performed by 60 families of Karkatha Pillaimar. There was a huge treasure hidden inside the temple. Once a man with his mystical power comes to know about the treasure and he informed about it to the 60 families. They all wanted to take out the treasure.

They approached an astrologer, who was also a Siththar to come and visit the temple. When he come to the temple he realised why he has been called. Initially he refused to take out the treasure but later he accepted, realising that the right time has come for the to taken out. The astrologer told that there are 21 Parivara Thevathaikal protecting and guarding the treasure and the temple. During Maasi Thiruvizha in Tiruchendur all the Parivara Thevathaikal go there except the Chappani Madan.

Only when they can tie the Chappani Madan with mystical powers and offer pregnant goat, pregnant pig and pregnant lady and do the pooja. Then only they can dig out the treasure and they have to do it before the Parivara Thevathikal returns.

They gathered all the things required for pooja and waited till the 7th day of Maasi Thiruvizha. But till the late evening they were not able to find out a pregnant lady and they have to do the offering in the night. They were worried. Suddenly they found a pregnant woman crossing their village on her way to her mother's place for delivery. They stopped her, enquired about her.

With evil intention in their mind they used honey coated words to conceived her and made her stay in the night. They told her that it is not advisable for a full-term pregnant lady to travel late night and they will take care of her and she can leave in the next morning.

Late night they did all the pooja rituals and offered the goat, pig one by one. When the lady's turn came, she realised that she was in big trouble and how the villagers deceived her. When they was ready to offer her, she with immense anger cursed at the astrologer, "for 7 generations you will not have any a girl child." (It happened and for 7 generations there were no female children in the family.)

At last they took the treasure made 61 shares including the astrologer and shared among them. Astrologer refused to take the share, he then buried his share there itself and released the Chappani Madan.

Chappani Madan rushed to Tiruchendur and explained what had happened to all the Parivara Thevathigal. They got really angry, came back, locked all the 60 houses and burnt them. All the members of the 60 families died, except a lady who went to her mother's family for delivery. She delivered a boy baby whose generation still lives in that place.

The Astrologer Siththar has a son named Karppa Siththar who is very much interested in hunting. The Astrologer had warned him not to go in the south direction for hunting since Kallal is to the south of Kurumbur. One day Karppa Siththar didn’t find anything to hunt so he went in the south direction and hunted a lot than usual. When he returned home his father asked how he got a lot to hunt. He replied that he went in the south direction. The Astrologer got shocked and worried. The same day his son got sick. The same day night in Karppa Siththar’s dream god appeared and told him, “I am in the south direction, come and perform poojas for me. You will be relieved form your sickness.” He asked, “Oh my Lord, I don’t know exactly where you are?” God replied, “Come in the south direction where you hunted yesterday there a Garuda (hawk) will circle trice and then peck the ground. You just dig that place I will be there, do abishegam and offer me some grains.”

The next day without informing his father Karppa Siththar went in the south direction and has told by god in the dream, he found a garuda and it pecked the ground. It was that place where the deity was found earlier. Since 60 families where destroyed no one performed poojas, the sand surrounded the place and the deity was buried.

Karppa Siththar took the deity out, did the abishegam and offered grains. He did pooja everyday and slowly he recovered from sickness.

After sometime famine hit the place so siththar kept the deity in a palm leave box went from one place to another and did simple pooja by geting alms from people.

Then he settle near on a mountain near Sivalar Kulam (which is to the East of Aladipatti). To perform abishegam and to drink he needed water so he pierced the ground with a Vel, water came out like a spring and it is named as Echi-Na Uthu.

As the Siththar becomes old, the God wanted to settle in a permanent place. There was a landlord named Periya Pillai and God decided to get a place of land for him to settle. Suddenly Periya Pillai became sick. He was affected by a disease called carbuncle (rajapilavai). He suffered a lot; nobody was able to cure him. God appeared in his dream and asked him, “If I cure your disease, what will you give me?” Periya Pillai told he was ready to offer anything that God wished. God said “show your disease to Siththar, he will provide you with simple medication and you give him one eighth of your land. During those times people who suffered with carbuncle will not survive. Siththar just gave him sacred ashes (thiruneer). The landlord was cured soon and he gave the land to Siththar as told.

For sometime Siththar did pooja under Karuvanni tree near pond. Later Siththar saw the present place of the temple. There was a small amman temple with a well and banyan tree. He decided that that was the best place for the deity. That place is now known as Aladipatti. He established the temple there itself and performed poojas.

Later he became very old and feeble. He called his relatives to perform poojas. God wanted to honour Siththar so he gave the left side of the temple to build his tomb. As per god’s wish the Siththar idol was established inside the temple and pooja are performed regularly till now.

For head ache or any disease related to head, if you pray to Siththar you will get immediate relief. During Aavani and Panguni thiruvizha on the 7th day they offer Kapala oil to Siththar which is believed to cure diseases. For any kind of body alignments or mind disorders people believe Vaithiyalinga Swamy is the doctor who cures the disease with vilvam leaves, thiruneer and theertham.
